Collecting Coincidence 3... You know who?
So, in the early 90's, I was in a Scooter Club in San Francisco. We were called "Secret Society". I had met most of the members at scooter rallies, parties... anywhere scooters gathered. After a bit I pledged to be a member of the club, it was an interesting road, but eventually I was accepted. At that time there were two different chapters. One in San Francisco, and one in San Diego, which was where the club started. I say I "was" in the club, but I guess I still am. I just haven't been active in many years. But for the sake of this tale, at the time I was in the San Francisco Chapter.
I had been scootering around S.F. for a bit before I got in the club. At the time I had a Frankinstein bike.
( for you Vespa geeks, It was a 1958 Vespa wide frame with a 1975 Vespa 150 super motor. I had a special baracket fabricated to hold the mounting bolt, and the wiring was all cobbled together to make it all work. It shouldn't have, but it did.)
But it looked cool. and it took me wherever I wanted to go. Back and forth to work, on scooter rallys...
So eventually I met people from the club. I went to the parties, I went to the rallies. I hung around.
I pledged, and after a few hiccups, went through the initiation, and was eventually voted in.
So, one of the bylaws of the club was that if you were in one chapter, and wanted to join the other chapter, you didn't have to go through the same pledge proceedures as someone on the outside. There were a few considerations, but it was pretty much a simple vote. In or out.
It only happened once while I was in San Francisco.
So, it is important to say that at the time, I didn't know any of the San Diego Chapter. I would later, but at this point, I did not. But, one of the San Diego members, "Nick" moved to San Francisco, and pledged our chapter. He seemed ok, what with my limited interactions.
But here is the thing. I didn't know him. I didn't know his friends, at the time I didn't even know his San Diego club brothers. He was literally a stranger to me, other than that we were in different chapters of the same club. We met briefly at a club meeting ( when he pledged), had a few drinks afterword, but that was it..
Then he was gone for a couple weeks, off to New York.
In the interim we voted him in. Why not? He seemed ok, and was a member in good standing at the only other chapter.
He returned and at the next meeting was now a member of the S.F. Chapter. After that meeting, we went to our local pub to celebrate.
At one point he took me aside.
He told me that while he was in New York, he had gone to a party in Brooklyn.
Friends of friends of friends, he said.
It wasn't a "scooter" thing, nobody he knew, just a party that he found him self at.
He said someone asked where he was from, he told them, well, San Diego, but currently San Francisco...
"Ok," I said...
Then he handed me a folded piece of paper.
I opened it.
It said
"Hey this is (redacted), a friend of your Sister, We met when you were here a couple years ago, Turns out we all know Tiki King"
I had to read it a few times.
So, it turns out that a person I didn't know, moved five hundred miles from their home town, met me breifly, then took a trip almost three thousand miles away from that, and then at a random party, met one of the few people I had met, one of the few times I had been to the east coast?
What are the odds?
Apperently 100%
